From behind bars, Gary Ward is ensuring that the homeless population in Suffolk will have a free meal this Saturday.

Ward is a convicted felon who is currently incarcerated at the Greensville Correctional Center. But he wants to give back, and his family is helping him do it.

“My dad was incarcerated and wanted to do something to give back, and the family decided to volunteer to do what he wanted,” said Ward’s daughter, Arnisa Ward.

Ward was interested in doing something for the homeless population, and his family helped him expand on his idea and make it a reality. They plan to feed the homeless twice a year, and Arnisa will also be passing out blankets to the homeless population when the weather starts to get colder.

“If you’re fortunate enough to have anything, it’s better to share with the less fortunate,” Arnisa said.

Arnisa along with her two daughters, Dymon and Deja, will be helping with the event, and they will be serving hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, baked beans and more.

The event will happen at 2 p.m. Saturday at 506 E. Washington St.
