With the new weekly ratings coming out this week, Suffolk teams have a good chance of making the playoffs.

The regular season is winding down, and the playoffs are starting to take shape. As it stands right now, three Suffolk teams have solidified playoff spots. But with three games left in the regular season, there is still time to get things figured out.

In this week’s Virginia High School League power ratings, Nansemond River High School came out at fourth in the Class 5 Region A. If the playoffs were to start today, the Warriors would host a playoff game. They are currently 4-3, and to move up to maybe a third or second seed, the team will have to win out. Coach Justin Conyers thinks it’s possible.

“Everything we want is still in front of us,” Conyers said. “We want to win out and get into the playoffs and become back-to-back regional champions.”

King’s Fork High School came in at fourth in the Class 4 Region A ratings. The Bulldogs are coming off of a tough loss to Indian River High School last week. Moreover, outside of perhaps two other teams in the Southeastern District, King’s Fork plays teams with higher classifications. Like Nansemond River, King’s Fork could have a home game for at least one week with the current ratings. The Bulldogs were the No. 1 seed in their region last year, which was a first in school history.

The Cavs are currently the only Suffolk school that is on the outside looking in. With the top eight teams making the playoffs, a couple of wins going forward could push Lakeland High School into the playoff picture. At 1-6, winning the rest of their Southeastern District games could possibly put them in at the end. Lakeland will need a win over rival King’s Fork High School Friday night to help with that push.

“We are just trying to get this thing going,” Coach Kevin Knight said. “It’s almost over. So, we are going to keep working hard to win some more games and get in the playoffs and do some things.”

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy came in at No. 1 again in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II poll. NSA is 7-0 after beating VISAA Division I opponent Norfolk Academy last week. Coach Mike Biehl stated last week if NSA is No. 1 at the end of the regular season, then that means something. Right now, it means nothing. NSA can go to 8-0 this week, and they can do so on their homecoming night.

All teams will be in action this Friday looking to improve on their playoff profiles.
