Driver Days is set to return to Suffolk’s charming community next week, and the annual festival isn’t complete without the Driver Cornhole Tournaments scheduled for Oct. 20 and 21.
There will be two tournaments on Saturday, and initial registration will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Entry is $25 per person in a blind draw format for both Saturday tournaments, with the second tournament immediately following the first. Chips will be drawn at 10 a.m. before matches begin at 10:30 a.m.
The Sunday tournament will be all day long, with a $5 blind draw entry. The first registration will begin at 11 a.m. before bags start flying at noon.
There’s an $800 bonus being added to both tournaments on Saturday. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top four teams in each tournament, and those that sign up for the first tournament on Saturday will be eligible for a $2 beer arm band if they are of legal drinking age.
Ken Parsons, owner of the Knot Hole Station and one of the tournament organizers, started holding cornhole tournaments in Driver back in 2011. The first was to raise money for Page Middle School in Gloucester County, after the school had been destroyed by a tornado.
More than two dozen regular players come to Driver every Wednesday night to commiserate and compete, Parsons said. The Driver Cornhole Facebook page has more than 500 followers, and some of the best cornhole players in the world will be coming back to where they started for Driver Days, like James Baldwin and Allen “Rocky” Rockwell.
“We have a good turnout for it, and I already know there’s people coming from Carolina, Maryland and possibly Georgia,” Parsons said. “It’s one of the best tournaments in the area.”
