The Warriors were held to eight points Friday night in their 35-8 loss to Oscar Smith High School.

In what is usually a tough matchup for anyone, Nansemond River High School hosted Oscar Smith High School Friday night. Oscar Smith left Suffolk as the victors, remaining undefeated while the Warriors’ current record goes even at 3-3.

Oscar Smith applied early pressure by quickly taking a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. They scored on both a rushing and passing touchdown. Nansemond River continued to play hard to try to make things happen before it got out of hand, but they stalled on a few drives in the first half.

The Warriors had a drive at the end of the half that was going well. Nansemond River had gotten the ball all the way to the Tigers’ 14-yard line, but the Tigers defense was able to remain stout. Oscar Smith went on to score again, taking a 21-0 lead at the half. From then on, the Warriors were forced to play catch-up as a team in the second half.

“We had some good things going for us, but we shot ourselves in the foot with some penalties,” Coach Justin Conyers said. We have to find a way to win those tough games and be able to overcome mistakes. Against teams like Oscar Smith, mistakes will cost you.”

The Tigers pretty much cruised throughout the second half, with Nansemond River scoring a late touchdown in the fourth quarter. Joeziah Autrey caught an interception and returned it for a short touchdown. Quijon Gordon converted the two-point conversion.

“We just didn’t execute,” Conyers said. “In all the games we’ve lost, they’ve been tough games. When you’re playing against these great teams in the Southeastern District, you have to limit as many mistakes as possible.”

Nansemond River will look to get back on track against the Western Branch High School on the road Friday. Western Branch will be looking to get their first win, so the Warriors will have to be prepared for their best shot.
