Better coffee downtown

The third wave of quality coffee has come to Suffolk at a new shop in an old spot on Main Street.

Pourfavor opened its doors to patrons during the Taste of Suffolk festivities on Sept. 8. The coffee shop is located in the back of the World Class Realty office at 347 N. Main St. Patrons can park at the nearby public parking spot and walk over to the shop.

They’ll find a colorful and inviting atmosphere, with strings of lights akin to Pourfavor’s Virginia Beach location and walls decorated in an array of eclectic art, from depictions of caffeine molecules to the face of Charlie Chaplin.

The shop has already gotten regular customers since opening day, General Manager Melody Brown said.

“We have met our goal every day that we’ve been open, and we haven’t done entirely a large amount of marketing either,” she said. “It’s mostly been word of mouth and feedback from the people coming in.”

That positive feedback is for the specialty coffee drinks made with ingredients from local companies such as the Specialty Club in Virginia Beach. This standard is typical at “third wave” coffee shops, a term that refers to a movement of high-quality coffee that’s produced more like an artisanal foodstuff, like fine wine.

“Having a palate for coffee is actually very similar to having a palate for wine,” Brown said.

The baristas are able to treat orders as educational experiences for those that are interested in broadening their caffeinated horizons. Simple directions of what flavors they’re looking for — bitter versus sweet, for example — can lead to new favorites.

“It gives them a delicacy experience as well as an educational experience,” said barista Jessi Jones.

More and more customers have been won over with each sip, like Sara Dreyee and her iced black and white mocha.

“You can tell that they put love into their coffee,” Dreyee said. “It just tastes fresher. It’s the best I’ve ever had.”

The kitchen also puts out a seasonal menu of breakfast and lunch options. One of the more popular offerings has been the Cuban sandwich with slow-cooked pulled pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard.

“It’s a meat-lover’s delight,” barista Stephen Pereya said as he filled another order.

Brown said there are plans to expand the seating in the property’s spacious backyard and host events with local organizations. The shop has already become a destination for many that craved a hangout spot downtown.

“We needed one for many years,” said Madison Heard. “It’s really nice to have one here in Suffolk.”
