The Warriors were no match on the road for the Braves as they took a 40-6 loss.

On a short week, Nansemond River High School wasn’t able to get much going Friday. The Warriors went on the road to face an undefeated Indian River High School team and took their second loss of the season. The loss puts the Warriors at 2-2 on the season.

Nansemond River fell behind 6-0 early in the first quarter. Indian River put up two more scores in the second quarter before Nansemond River finally stopped the bleeding. A 36-yard touchdown run by Kevin Johnson with 1:29 left in the second quarter cut the lead to 21-6. Unfortunately for the Warriors, that second-quarter score was the only time they saw the end zone Friday night.

“Indian River is a great team,” Coach Justin Conyers said. “We made a lot of mistakes out there, and against a team like that you can’t have those.”

Penalties, playing on a short week and not having the ideal situations they wanted during the game aided the loss. Conyers didn’t want to make an excuse for himself or his team. They feel they are still in a good situation at 2-2 and will head to next week more focused.

“We just have to go back to the drawing board and go back to doing how we do things,” Conyers said. “Those guys wanted it more, and that’s what happened out there. Our goals are still in front of us, so we are going to move on from this and get better.”

Indian River also won the regular-season matchup between these two teams last year.

Nansemond River will now turn its attention to King’s Fork High School next week. They will be on the road once again with a chance to win the city.

“These kids know what’s at stake, and we’ll be ready,” Conyers said. “We want to be the best in the city, and we’ll have to prove that again this week.”
