Halle Fago was voted Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week after a hat-trick against Grassfield High School.

As a freshman for the Nansemond River High School field hockey team, Halle Fago has impressed. So far, she has looked like a scoring machine that has not been fazed by the varsity spotlight.

Last week, Nansemond River took on Grassfield. The Lady Warriors won 6-0 with Fago scoring half of the team’s goals. In another game this season against Deep Creek High School, she scored four goals. She currently sits at eight goals and an assist.

“I think I played pretty well,” Fago said. “The outcomes of what I did would not be possible without my teammates moving the ball well up the field.”

Fago feels comfortable on the varsity level, because she has been practicing with this particular group for the last three years. To her, it’s a good feeling to be helping her team out as a freshman. She knows a lot of people don’t get that opportunity.

Being able to score goals so early in the season has helped build her confidence. She has goals of helping her team win states this season. If possible, she also hopes to break the school’s single-season scoring record this year. She just wants to come in and contribute any way she can.

“Whether it be scoring, assisting or playing defense, I wanted to come in and contribute,” she said.

The freshman Lady Warrior will be the first to tell you that she is very competitive and likes to win. She has been playing field hockey for 10 years and learned at a very young age that you have to score to win games. Her competitiveness on the field sets her apart, and on the field, you can see she is passionate and determined.

“My desire to win helps me to perform in my best ways,” she said. “I’ve been playing this game for a while now, and that kind of experience has helped me as well.”

Fago draws inspiration from a multitude of people. Her brother, Corey Fago, played baseball for Nansemond River and inspires her in many ways, as does as her grandfather. Fellow freshman teammate Abby Fischer has been an inspiration to her as well. The two are best friends and are the only two freshmen Lady Warriors on the team.

In her spare time, she likes to hang out with her family most of the time.

Fago and the Lady Warriors field hockey team will be back in action again on the road Tuesday against Oscar Smith High School.
