Nansemond River High School’s football team went on the road Friday night and took down the Hickory High School Hawks 28-0.

It was a good bounce-back win for the Warriors after a disappointing loss against Maury High School last week. Not only did they get a strong win but also they added a shutout under their belts as well.

“Anytime you can win a game, you feel good about that,” Coach Justin Conyers said after the Warriors win. “We still haven’t peaked yet, but that’s a good thing, because you don’t want to do that so early in the season. We picked up in the second half and continued to get better and better.”

The Warriors defense had eight sacks as a team, and it suffocated a Hickory offensive on the road. Junior Keonte’ Cobb had six of the team’s eight sacks. Joeziah Autrey forced a fumble that was picked up for a defensive touchdown by Datron Branch.

Conyers feels good about his team’s defense not only in Hampton Roads but throughout the state as well.

“Our defense is excellent,” he said. “We were close to a shutout last week as well. We feel like we have the best defense in Hampton Roads, hands down. We had sacks, turnovers and a defensive touchdown.”

Kevin Johnson, Quijoun Gordon and JaQuelle Harrell all added a touchdown on the board for the Warriors.

Conyers was able to get his first win as the Nansemond River head football coach.

“It feels great. I have gotten a lot of support from everyone,” he said. “We are happy to bring this win back to the city. The city has our back, and we have to take this win and just continue to keep getting better.”

Nansemond River will host Lakeland High School next week, and that game is expected to contain a lot of emotion. The past two years, both games have had serious turnover events that favored the Warriors. Like the other Suffolk schools, Nansemond River wants to have the city championship, and to get there they will have to take care of the Cavs first.
