The King’s Fork High School golf team accomplished a first in its win over Nansemond River High School on Thursday.

The Bulldogs defeated the Warriors in golf for the first time in school history. The two teams matched up at the Nansemond River Golf Course, and the Bulldogs were able to come out on top, 373-395, on a very hot day.

“It’s a good feeling,” Coach Robert Casteen said. “I had been informed that it was the first time we had beat Nansemond River since we have been open. It’s a good feeling, and all the guys and girls were excited about it. It was special to not only win the match but make some history.”

Rebecca Hutchings was the medalist for King’s Fork with a score of 81. The Bulldogs are halfway to one of their goals, which was to secure a city championship. With a win over Nansemond River, all the Bulldogs need now is a win over Lakeland High School.

They have the week off this week and will get back to matches the following week. Casteen believes the Bulldogs have a chance at sustaining their momentum until the time they play again.

“I’m very confident that if we go out and play how we can, we achieve our goals,” he said. “I think this win will be good for our confidence. You want to be able to keep the momentum going, but next week we can continue to work hard and improve on our games as we get ready for matches again.”

King’s Fork will face Lakeland at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Nansemond River Golf Course.
