The Bulldogs’ rushing attack led the way to a big first win over Woodrow Wilson High School on Friday night.
As the current Southeastern District champions, King’s Fork High School is being held to a high standard this season. They opened at home against a Wilson team that had nothing to lose Friday night. King’s Fork won 45-24, making a statement in the first win of the season.
Before the game, Coach Scottie Littles talked about wanting to make sure they ran the ball as well as stopped the run, and he felt good about that.
“I think we absolutely did what we had set out to do,” he said. “We ran the ball for 300-plus yards, and I don’t think we gave up a big run from them all game long. We also didn’t commit not one single personal foul.”
Leo Wethington set the tone for the Bulldogs on the ground. There were times during the game where the Bulldogs were converting third and distance downs with rushes. Marc Dyer also did some good things for the Bulldogs on the ground.
Defensively, the Bulldogs didn’t let up either. They blocked a punt and intercepted two passes. Jeremiah Bryant intercepted one pass and Davion Collins had the other. Korey Foster had a big all-around game Friday night, scoring three total touchdowns. Foster had two short-yardage touchdowns and a scoop-and-score for a touchdown after a Damion Rose blocked punt. It was obvious the Bulldogs were excited to return to the field.
“They understand the expectations that we have,” Littles said. “We want to stay disciplined and always ready to play. We want to show emotion but not be emotional.”
Despite a strong win, the Bulldogs know there is still work to do. Even though Wilson couldn’t get much going on the ground, they were able to do some good things through the air that the Bulldogs will look to clean up.
“We didn’t play our best football, but we were able to win the game,” Littles said. “We feel like it was good for us to face some adversity in this first game of the season. You don’t want to be playing your best right now. We are excited about what we did out there, but we know it’s more work to be done.”
King’s Fork will have a bye week this week before returning to the field to face Western Branch High School Sept. 7.
