There’s still room for more children to cast out and enjoy some outdoor fun this September with the Suffolk-Nansemond Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America.

The chapter will hold a Youth Fishing Rodeo on Sept. 15 at the chapter’s property behind King’s Fork Middle School on Kings Fork Road. Media Chair Tim Doxey said that approximately four of the 20 available spots are still available for children ages 4 to 15 to participate as of Friday.

The cost is $5 per young angler, and participants must RSVP before Sept. 15 in order to participate. Each child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. No fishing license is required, and all equipment will be provided with help from Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Parking will be available at the middle school, and children will be taken on a hay ride to the chapter’s pond. Registration and a safety briefing will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. Volunteers will teach the children how to hook bait and cast their lines as they fish from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

“This is a chance for them to experience the outdoors and learn a little bit about fishing,” Doxey said.

The children will help balance the population of different fish species in the pond with each catch, from widemouth bass to a variety of sunfish, he said.

“This gives us the opportunity to talk to them about that from a conservation standpoint as well,” he said.

Lunches of hotdogs, hamburgers, chips and soft drinks will be offered at 11:30 a.m. along with certificates for categories like the most fish caught or the largest single catch.

The chapter participates in many events throughout the year, including river and adopt-a-road cleanups, and gives scholarships to college students pursuing studies pertaining to conservation and the environment.

Along with their annual Teddy Bear Hunt, the members of the chapter hold events like this to give families the opportunity to have fun outside the house while encouraging environmental stewardship, according to Doxey.

“We recruit them to become responsible licensed anglers and good stewards for our local waterways,” he said.
