The Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts will begin its 13th season this September with a schedule of new and returning theatrical, music and dance performances.
“We are offering 13 shows for our 13th season. We have really tried to have something for everyone,” said interim Executive Director Susan Lawrence. “Our programming is diverse and relevant to our community, and it presents an opportunity to come out and enjoy the show.”
Patrons have three options for arts entertainment at the Suffolk Center in September.
An exhibit of work from Suffolk Center students and instructors will be on display for a month, Sept. 13 to Oct. 13.
The Suffolk Center is welcoming back “Pinkalicious the Musical,” for another show in September. The show will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 22.
“In the past, we have taken surveys from patrons when they attend, and we have responded to their responses,” Lawrence said. “We have tried to bring back what they have asked for, and we have brought in more children’s shows like ‘Pinkalicious.’”
Local musicians performing downstairs in the center was met with a good reception, Lawrence said, and they were happy to meet the needs of patrons. In September, The Ben Phelps Project will kick off the “Downstairs at the Center,” at 8 p.m. Sept. 29.
October will give patrons of the Suffolk Center a chance to purchase pre-owned original art at their Y’Art Sale. The sale will begin at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 19 and run through Oct. 21. The sale is a partnership between the Suffolk Center and the Suffolk Art League.
Another musical will be coming to the Suffolk Center in October. “Annie” will be performed by the Hurrah Players at 2 p.m. Oct. 20.
Along with a musical, the Suffolk Center will host another gallery exhibit, “Joy Unfolding.” The exhibit will feature art and recycled creations by artist Dale Wayne and will be available for viewing Oct. 25 to Dec. 21.
November will feature music for patrons coming to the center. Another “Downstairs at the Center” session will feature Like Willette on Nov. 17. The other musical guest will be The Fabulous Equinox Orchestra on Nov. 30.
“They have a very contemporary feel to them like big band music. They will play some of the tried and true music, but they will also play some Christmas music as well,” Lawrence said.
December will see a slow schedule due to the holidays. They will show a movie, “Paddington” on Dec. 8, and the Virginia Choral Society will hit the center on Dec. 15 to sing carols and the lullabies of the Southwest.
January is deemed “Movie Month,” and the Suffolk Center has partnered with Suffolk Tourism to feature old school movies with a school theme. The movies will be featured at 7 p.m. every Thursday.
Also in January, the Sister Cities International Exhibit will be on display from Jan. 17 to Jan. 30, while Will Overman plays in a session of “Downstairs at the Center” on Jan. 18.
The final theater production of the season will grace the stage on Feb. 5. Mike Wiley will perform “Jackie Robinson: A Game Apart.” The season will continue in February with a gallery reception, a movie and a fundraiser.
Stephie Jones and Ed Obermeyer will be featured in the February gallery exhibit running from Feb. 7 to March 30. The exhibit has the theme “Coastal Conversations.”
They will also show “Remember the Titans” on Feb. 7 and their fundraiser, “Lamp It Up,” will be on Feb. 3.
Two shows will be on the Suffolk Center stage in March. The Soul Street Dance Company will perform March 9, and the Next Generation Leahy, a family band, will perform on March 23.
April features two musical acts and a new gallery exhibit at the Suffolk Center. The Embers will perform April 5, and the Chowan University Choirs will perform April 28. The new exhibit will feature pieces from the Ceramic Designers Association from April 18 to May 17.
The season ends in May with the Masters of Soul on May 11 and a digital photography exhibit in the gallery from May 30 to June 29.
