Registration is still open for the sixth annual Teen Summit that’s set to be held at the Hilton Garden Inn Suffolk Riverfront on Saturday.
This dynamic conference is held annually by The Suffolk Department of Parks and Recreation and the Suffolk Office on Youth for teens ages 11 to 17, as well as parents and adults that work with youth. The sessions will expand on prevention activities and programs that have been developed as a part of the Suffolk Initiative on Youth Crime Prevention Plan.
“It’s a way for us to brings teens, parents and facilitators together to simply provide information that will empower them,” according to Rickeda Fofana, youth and outreach coordinator for Suffolk Parks and Recreation.
The theme for this year’s conference is L.I.T. which stands for “Leading, Inspiring and Thriving.” Adults and teens will participate in interactive programs that reinforce topics such as health and wellness, self-esteem and the importance of setting goals.
Teens will be advised on relevant dilemmas in their daily lives like how to effectively navigate social media while protecting their identities online. Adults will attend sessions like “bridging the gap,” a lesson on the behavioral warning signs among teens that indicate issues that need to be addressed with care.
There will be two separate panel discussions about how to balance a career and family as an adult and how to positively interact with adults as a teen. Fofana said one of the most important takeaways that teens should have from this conference is that it’s OK to say “no” in uncomfortable situations and to reach out for help from trusted adults.
“We’re trying to bridge those lines of communication for better understanding,” she said.
The conference will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn Suffolk Riverfront located at 100 E. Constance Road. It’s free and open to the public, but registration is required and is only available through Friday. An after party will follow the conference sessions for those that participate.
