More details on how a Thursday shooting in the downtown business district transpired were included in an arrest warrant for the suspect.

Michael Jermell Hatton, 44, is charged with aggravated malicious wounding, shoot/stab/cut/wound in commission of a felony, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and discharge firearm in public with injury, according to a city press release.

The victim is Tony Jonathan Lundy, 47. He was listed in critical condition the evening of the shooting.

Sentara spokesman Dale Gauding said Monday he did not have permission from Lundy and his family to release updated information on his condition.

But the arrest warrant filed in Suffolk General District Court says Lundy was rushed into emergency surgery upon his arrival at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He suffered gunshot wounds to his left leg, back and abdomen and was left with a collapsed lung and intestines damaged so badly that part of them had to be removed.

A police detective described his preliminary information in the arrest warrant.

Hatton stayed on scene after the shooting and approached officers, the arrest warrant states. Witnesses identified him as the shooter, and Hatton was taken into custody, the document states.

Witnesses told the detective that there was a verbal altercation inside Beamon’s Unisex Salon at 388 E. Washington St. It turned physical, and Lundy ended up on top of Hatton, the warrant states.

Lundy got off of Hatton and left the barber shop, the warrant states. Witnesses told the detective that Hatton “got up, pulled out a gun and followed Mr. Lundy out the door.”

“Once outside, Mr. Hatton began walking toward Mr. Lundy and shooting at him,” the arrest warrant states.

The shooting was reported at 10:43 a.m.

All shell casings recovered from the scene were outside the barber shop, the document says.

Hatton spoke with a detective and gave a statement. He acknowledged there was a physical altercation and said he didn’t remember how Lundy got off of him, the warrant states.

“He advised that when he got up he saw that Mr. Lundy was coming toward him and he pulled out his gun and shot him because he was in fear of his life,” the document states.

News station WTKR quoted witnesses as saying the fight started over whether actress Halle Berry should portray famed singer Aretha Franklin in a film. Franklin was suffering from cancer and had died at her Michigan home hours before the shooting.

Hatton has an arraignment set for Aug. 24 in Suffolk General District Court.
