Storefront looks to wow passersby

Murals are typically placed on the sides of buildings, but Hoyt March and Kate Latham didn’t want to do anything typical to Ann Horton’s.

Now when motorists drive down Holland Road, they’ll see a small building covered in red geraniums with boards covered in the same pattern going across the property.

Latham wanted to have the right person doing the mural, and she and March decided on Troy Summerell of OnieTonie.

Summerell has provided murals for the Neon and Vibe Districts in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, respectively. He has also done murals for the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters.

While the mural was to draw someone’s eye to the storefront, it also represented the mentality of the owner.

“Hoyt and his two friends created the Earth and Arts Festival, and it gives the mentality to celebrate Suffolk and celebrate the arts,” Latham said. “It’s an odd flair, and it was needed to spruce up the store before we open for the fall.”

Red geraniums are March’s favorite flower, and they accented the things around the storefront to let the red color pop even more. The benches, miniature statues and flag poles were all accented in bright blue.

“We hope that it piques the curiosity of people,” Latham said.

Summerell was happy to bring mural art to Suffolk and expand his brand farther into Hampton Roads.

“For me, a lot of my work is taking something old and making it new,” Summerell said. “This is a great opportunity, and I’m loving the artistic freedom.”

Summerell started the mural last week, and with the help of Latham and March, they made significant progress. The mural should be finished by Wednesday.

Ann Horton’s sells a variety of plants that are grown in western Suffolk, and they are sell them to Suffolk citizens for eight to 10 weeks during the fall.

They plan on opening up in mid-September, but they don’t have a set date for opening, Latham said.
