The Suffolk Police Department is investigating a crash that happened Saturday and a subsequent assault against two of the people involved in the crash.

City spokeswoman Diana Klink said the crash happened at 2:35 p.m. at the intersection of Pruden Boulevard and Kings Fork Road.

Preliminary investigation found that a 2011 Hyundai Sonata driven by Ashley Desirae Boswell, 23, of Suffolk, was traveling westbound on Kings Fork Road. Boswell attempted a left turn onto Pruden Boulevard but failed to yield to oncoming traffic, Klink stated. She crashed into a 2012 Buick Enclave being driven by Larry Chavis, 66, of Suffolk.

Boswell was issued a summons for failure to yield, Klink said.

Following the accident, Klink said, Larry Chavis and his wife, Cindy Chavis, “were allegedly assaulted by an unknown male who had arrived on scene and left prior to the arrival of officers.”

In a Facebook post on Sunday, the Chavises’ daughter, Courtney Hirneisen, gave her parents’ version of events after the crash.

She said two men arrived after the crash and slammed Larry Chavis in the chest, knocking him down into a ditch bank. He is in his late 60s, has a defibrillator and is recovering from a hip replacement, his daughter noted.

The man then grabbed Cindy Chavis by her arm and punched her in the head. Cindy Chavis is also in her 60s and has had eye surgery on the same side the man hit her, Hirneisen wrote.

“Witnesses describe these guys as out of control and raging,” wrote Hirneisen, who declined to speak with the Suffolk News-Herald, citing the ongoing investigation.

Hirneisen gave names for the two men she said assaulted her parents, but in accordance with News-Herald policy, the newspaper will not identify them until they are charged with a crime.

Klink said the investigation into the crash and the assault remains ongoing.
