The Salvation Army is partnering with Rutter Mills, WVEC and Walmart for the Write Stuff Campaign to get students the school supplies they need to succeed this school year.

The campaign is an annual school supply drive in Suffolk and other participating cities in which donors contribute individually or through their churches, businesses, civic clubs and other organizations.

“It allows us to help those parents who can’t necessarily provide everything for their kids to go back to school,” Salvation Army Corps Capt. Shauntrice Anthony said in a phone interview.

Donors can bring the supplies to the Walmart stores located at 1200 N. Main St. and 6259 College Drive, to the Salvation Army Community Center at 400 Bank St. or donate online. The distribution of these school supplies will be held on Aug. 27.

According to the press release, the Write Stuff campaign collected and distributed 2,878 items last year — including 139 backpacks — that helped 157 children and 62 families. Recommended donations include three-ring binders, pencil pouches, markers, colored pencils, composition books, glue, crayons, wide and college ruled paper, pencils and pens.

But the biggest need by far this year is for backpacks.

“That was the item that we did not have enough of last year,” Anthony said, who counted only 20 backpacks of Wednesday with the hope of collecting 200 in total.
