The Warriors golf team defeated rival Lakeland High School Thursday evening.

Nansemond River High School golf team is halfway to earning another city championship. After a 411-446 win at Suffolk Golf Course, the Warriors have won four of their first five matches.

One of the Warriors’ usual goals for the season is to defeat both of their cross-city rivals, and they are 50 percent of the way there. Corey Hasson from Lakeland was the medalist with a score of 89.

“It was our first time playing this particular course,” Warriors coach Brandon Frye said. “I think we did OK for that being the first time on the course. It was hot out there as well.”

Even though it is still relatively early in the season, Frye likes what he has seen from his team so far. They have a tough schedule of matches next week, and on the following week, they will face their other rival, King’s Fork High School.

“It’s going to be harder than usual to win the city championship,” Frye said. “Both Lakeland and King’s Fork are very good this year, and we know it is going to be a tough match with King’s Fork coming up here soon.”

Before taking on Lakeland Thursday, the Warriors had also defeated Oscar Smith High School. Sam Wolfe was the medalist with a score of 96.

Nansemond River will face Western Branch High School Monday at Sleepy Hole Golf Course. They will also face Hickory High School on Tuesday at Sleepy Hole.
