The King’s Fork High School golf team got its first win of the season over Deep Creek Monday afternoon.

It was the third match of the season for the Bulldogs, who won 402-430 at the Nansemond River Golf Course. After a week of play, Coach Robert Casteen is feeling good about where his team is at the moment.

“I feel like we are starting in a better place than we did last year, both score wise and physicality wise,” he said. “That’s a positive, and hopefully if we continue at this pace, we can finish better than we did last season.”

Rebecca Hutchings was the medalist for King’s Fork with a score of 88. She is one of the younger players on the team right now but is among the leaders as well. Casteen is excited about Hutchings’ potential.

King’s Fork’s score improved from the first match to the second, even though they lost. Their score against Deep Creek wasn’t their lowest this season but was good enough for the win.

“That’s really all that matters is that we played well enough for the win,” Casteen said. “I think as long as we continue to work to be better, I am happy. The kids want to continue to lower their scores as well as our team scores, and we have good hopes for this year.”

King’s Fork will play against Grassfield High School next. With such a young team, Casteen is happy that his returning players are willing to help his younger players. That helps with the team chemistry.
