Bon Vivant wine shop in Governor’s Pointe is asking residents to say “cheers” to donating to the local chapter of Project Lifesaver at a wine tasting fundraiser.
The wine tasting will be held at the store June 5 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Tickets are $10 per person, with all proceeds going to Suffolk’s Project Lifesaver, a program that helps track down adults and children who tend to wander as a result of conditions such as Alzheimer’s, autism and Down syndrome. Suffolk Fire and Rescue runs the local chapter of the international program.
Bon Vivant owner Brenda Gillihan said she decided to hold the fundraiser when Suffolk Fire and Rescue Lt. Mason Copeland, who is in charge of operations for the Suffolk chapter, told her the program works entirely on donations.
“When he shared with me that the project is unfunded, we thought this would be the perfect way to help them out,” she said. “They are always there for us, so we should be there for them.”
Copeland said the Lifesaver program, which has existed in the city for 10 years, helps a lot of citizens, but he hopes to reach even more.
He said he hopes the funds raised can help purchase more personal transmitters and tracking equipment, train more Fire and Rescue workers to use the equipment and enroll more citizens in the program.
“This fundraiser through Bon Vivant, as well as some other fundraisers, will help achieve those goals,” he said.
Attendees will enjoy and learn about four different wines from two vendors: Country Vendor and Roanoke Valley Wines.
Gillihan said she even purchased a special wine, appropriately called Firehouse Red, for the occasion.
She said all wine drinkers, both experienced and novice, are invited to learn more about their tastes.
“I think any opportunity to try wines is a fun way to explore wines,” she said. “Whenever you try different wines, you learn your own tastes.”
For more ways to benefit Project Lifesaver, there will be a raffle at the tasting and Bon Vivant will donate 10 percent of the sales that day.
Tickets are available at Bon Vivant, located at 1901 Governor’s Pointe Drive, or through Lt. Mason Copeland by reaching him at 754-8787.
