Fire displaces family

A family of five was displaced late Monday morning due to a residential structure fire in the 200 block of Catalpa Court.

Emergency Communications received the call at 11:35 a.m. and the first units arrived in the Bayberry Cove neighborhood at 11:41 a.m.

Heavy smoke was identified from a second story window, and the fire was restricted to the upstairs bedroom, according to a press release. The entire home suffered smoke damage even though the fire was contained to a single bedroom.

Occupants had evacuated the home before firefighters arrived on the scene, and the fire was deemed under control at 12:09 p.m., according to a press release.

The American Red Cross will be providing assistance to the family that was displaced – two adults and three juveniles.

Responding units included Engines 5, 10 and 25, Ladder 5, Rescue 1, Medic 5, Battalions 1 and 2, and Safety 1.

Suffolk Police provided traffic control and a portion of the roadway was closed in the immediate area due to the staging of emergency equipment.

An investigation will be handled by the Fire Marshall’s Office.
