Suffolk plucks ducks at park

Suffolk citizens went diving for ducks at Bennett’s Creek Park on Friday night as the Deloreans provided some music.

The plastic ducks were plucked from a kiddie pool for a chance to win a prize from Suffolk’s National Night Out. National Night Out is an annual event set for Aug. 7 that encourages neighbors to fight crime by getting to know one another and by building relationships with local law enforcement.

Most of the citizens already knew what National Night Out was, and most of them have been to parties in past years, according to National Night Out Chairman Diana Klink. Even though people already knew what the event was for, Klink was still happy to engage with the community.

“We get to share this with our citizens, and Suffolk has some of the largest events in Hampton Roads,” Klink said.

Residents from other cities across Hampton Roads told Klink they wished their cities had big National Night Out events like Suffolk does.

Children ran up to the National Night Out mascot, Nat Knight, and were eager to hug him and take pictures. Parents were happy to see their kids positively engaging with the event.

“I’m very excited,” said Donna Crandell. “Once we saw the signs for the event, we started to get excited. We always have a good time, and it is great working together to make Suffolk better.”

New Suffolk residents were happy to see the National Night Out tradition happening in their new communities.

“We are from Northern Virginia, and we have a big National Night Out,” said Kelly McCoy. “It’s great for kids to know what resources are available to their families and the community.”

According to Klink, there are more than 80 community partnerships and businesses have registered to participate in National Night Out.
