Self-reliance will be on display in different shades of green at the “Get Off the Grid! Sustainability Fair,” hosted by the Suffolk Public Library. The fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the North Suffolk Library this Saturday. The location was moved from Chuckatuck Library.

Various demonstrations will educate visitors on how to live sustainability. Naturalist Vickie Shufer will show how local plants can be used for first aid and other health benefits starting at 10 a.m.

“She came and did a wild food foraging program for us that was really popular,” adult program services coordinator Ashley Reed said.

At noon, Wayne Jones of Suffolk Litter Control and Keep Suffolk Beautiful will assemble and explain the utility of rain barrels. Visitors will enter a drawing for the chance to win one of the barrels, Reed said. Wanda Gerard will start a canning demonstration at 1 p.m. to show how to preserve foraged fruits and vegetables picked straight from a garden.

Vendors will include the beekeepers of G & S Apiary Inc. with many honey-based products, and Brown Chicken Brown Cow Farm. Attendees will have the opportunity to create their own vermicomposting — composting with worms — setup with the Phinney Family Worm Wranglers while supplies last, and Lone Sycamore Farm’s goats will be there for head scratches.

“They have an overly friendly goat named Jolene who’s just adorable,” Reed said.
