El Korita has opened up on East Washington Street, and the family-run business has brought its own Mexican flair to Suffolk.

The restaurant is authentic, and the menu features secret recipes that go back generations.

“What people like about us is how authentic our food is and the seafood we have,” said Linda Pena, the manager. “We make everything fresh.”

The restaurant hasn’t yet received its ABC license, but Pena believes once it does, it will be even more successful than it already has.

“Our drinks are going to set us apart,” Pena said. “The recipes are from Mexico.”

The restaurant has already cultivated good relationships with its neighbors, and delivery is available to a handful of nearby businesses.

Brick and Mortar Brewery will occasionally order food for their customers and either pick it up or El Korita will deliver it, since Brick and Mortar doesn’t serve its own food.

The food is special and it is something their family takes pride in, and they serve different kinds of Mexican food than most restaurants in the area.

Most people come in and enjoy trying the shrimp empanadas and the shrimp ceviche, and Pena said once they try it, they make sure to come back and order it.

The restaurant has only been open for three weeks, and the response has been above and beyond what the family thought it would be.

“We thought the response would be OK, but the first week took us by surprise,” Pena said.

El Korita didn’t have a large ribbon-cutting when the restaurant opened, but they plan on celebrating when they get their ABC license. They will be throwing a mariachi-themed party.

The restaurant, 200 E. Washington St., is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m.
