JFK alum named assistant at Virginia State

Virginia State’s basketball program announced the addition of Darryl Butler as an assistant men’s basketball coach on Thursday.
Butler is a Suffolk native, having played basketball for John F. Kennedy High School from 1980-84, including on the 1983 state championship team coached by Spencer Mayfield.
Butler comes to the Trojans after three years as associate head coach at Frederick Community College (Md.). Frederick’s gone 41-18 in the last two seasons and won the school’s first Region XX championship in 2010.
“Butler comes with a great deal of college coaching experience and recruiting ties especially in this region. He’s a VSU grad which means a great deal to our college community,” said Virginia State head men’s basketball coach Darryl Jacobs.
Prior to his time at Frederick C.C., Butler has been in assistant coaching jobs at Montgomery C.C. (Md.) , T.C. Williams High School, Howard University, Pepperdine University and Whittier College.
Butuler graduated from VSU in 1989 with a degree in Business Administration.
