Seeing an event that supports the community, and the community supporting that event, is truly gratifying and is a good reminder of what Suffolk is all about.

This happens almost daily in Suffolk, and another reminder happened on Saturday, when more than 200 people turned out for the Broken Oar Foundation’s 2018 Bass Fishing Tournament and Auction at the Johnsons’ property off Holland Road. There were about 100 competitors along with other folks who came to enjoy the day, bid on silent auction items and more.

Fish were caught, trophies were won and auction items went home in the hands of the happy high bidders. There was plenty of fun, food and friends spending a great day together.

However, the most important aspect of the day was remembering Thomas J. O’Connor IV and supporting local Boy Scouts.

O’Connor died in May 2013 at the age of 36, and his family has been holding the fishing tournament ever since. He was a Suffolk Lions Club member and an Eagle Scout in Boy Scout Troop 1, following a tradition set by other men in his family. His friends and family continue to support the event each year in memory of a man who died too young.

The Broken Oar Foundation, with the proceeds from the annual fishing tournament and silent auction, helps local Boy Scout families pay for summer camp, uniforms and other expenses, allowing more boys to participate in an organization to which O’Connor devoted so much time and energy. More than $80,000 has been raised through the tournament, which will help a lot of young men participate in the worthwhile programs of the Boy Scouts.

Like his brother, Jett Johnson, said on Saturday, we think O’Connor would be proud to see the results of the event held in his memory. We thank all those who supported this event and made it such a success.
