Jarrett Mayer was voted Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week after going 3-4 with two runs and an RBI in a win over King’s Fork High School.

The Nansemond River High School senior baseball standout has just finished up a solid senior season. In one of the Warrior’s final regular season acts of the year, he went 3-4 with two runs and an RBI to give his team the lift over King’s Fork High School.

“I wanted to play well, and things came together, and I was able to do so,” Mayer said. “I was focused at the plate when we were on offense, and I was focused when we were on defense.”

Focusing is a big part of what has made Mayer successful on the field. It is the key that keeps him efficient on the field. Before the season started, he was moved to center field from shortstop. Center field was a fun position for the senior to play, because he could show off his speed. He set three goals for himself this season. Before his senior season ended, he was hoping to have won another ring, make first team and give it all he could on the field. Nansemond River wasn’t able to win a ring this year, but he did give it his all on the field, and the first team all-district is soon to be determined.

Knowing that he can compete with anyone is what motivates him when he is out on the field. Watching his teammates succeed also motivates Mayer to the point he goes out there and helps his teammates as well. He is inspired by both his parents and his brother.

“They all work hard at what they do, and they inspire me to work hard and have fun while doing anything,” Mayer said of his family.

NBA All-Star Russell Westbrook is Mayer’s favorite athlete. Westbrook is known for his fearless attitude on the basketball court. He is tenacious and always energetic, and his attitude is something Mayer applies to his game on the field.

“He always plays like his life depends on it,” Mayer said. “Whether he is having a bad game or not, he is giving 100 percent. He leaves it all out on the court, and I do my best to try to leave it all out on the field.”

Overall, Mayer felt like he and his teammates had a solid season. There were times where he felt like they could have played better against certain teams, but in general he felt good about the talent on the team.

“I really wanted us all to make history and to succeed,” he said. “I think this season was good for us, and it was definitely a learning experience,” he said.

In his spare time, Mayer is mostly a homebody and likes to hang with his family and friends.
