Off-Road Day raises funds for CHKD

Off-roading enthusiasts came to Starr Motors with their vehicles in all shapes, size and colors on Saturday, but most of the vehicles were only one color when they left — brown.

The 11th annual event raised money for Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters this year, and more than 200 drivers were more than happy to fork over a donation to enter the show, enjoy the trail or both.

“We had no idea that it would be this popular,” Starr Motors service director Joe Bonney said of when the dealership started the event. “We knew it would be fun.”

The event has grown exponentially over the years, though. Hundreds of folks came to enjoy the festivities this year.

“It feels like it’s our biggest turnout,” Bonney said.

The off-roading takes place on land behind the dealership that is owned by the company. Thrill-seekers navigated large hills, a rock garden, a log pyramid, a mud pit and more on the trail.

Vico Construction, Vulcan Materials and Community Electric Cooperative donated materials for the trail, Bonney said, and local off-road clubs and Starr Motors customers donated their time last week to craft the obstacles.

“Off-road people are tight-knit and super generous,” Bonney said. “The generosity is just amazing. (This event) helps them give back, and it’s one of our community involvement activities.”

Tony Gelardo was attending his second or so Off-Road Day with the Hampton Roads Jeep Club. He said he had a fun time on the course this time.

“I came to one a few years ago, but my Jeep only had like 2,000 miles on it, so I wasn’t about to break anything then,” he joked.

Alex Jarrell won a trophy in the show for his 1942 Dodge Carryall. In addition to the show and the trail, there were food sales and vendors, children’s activities and plenty of fun to be had.

CHKD was impressed with the event.

“We are so grateful for community partners like Starr Motors,” said Kate Kruse, CHKD development officer. “With support from events like Off-Road Day, CHKD is able to provide meaningful programs such as child life, social work and pet therapy, which make a difference in the lives of the children we care for every day.”
