Summer camp investigates forensic possibilities

There’s still time for local students to learn how forensic science is used in courtrooms during the Suffolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s seventh annual Forensics Camp this summer.
The free summer camp will be held June 18 to 22 for students ages 12 to 15. The class size will be limited to 60 students, and the deadline for registration is June 7. There were already 10 students registered for the program as of Wednesday, according to Community Outreach Coordinator Joan Turner.
“If they want to come, they need to go ahead and sign up now,” Commonwealth’s Attorney C. Phillips Ferguson said in a phone interview.
Students will learn about real forensic science rather than dramatizations like “CSI,” hear from prosecutors about how they use forensic evidence in trials and investigate their own mock crime scenes, such as a burglary.
“We tend to have a lot of burglaries in the area, so we want to make sure they see that evidence as well,” Turner said in a phone interview.
Classes will be held each day from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Health and Human Services building, 135 Hall Ave.
Each class will have a guest instructor, including Turner, Suffolk Sheriff’s Deputies Andre Weaver and Debbie Callis, retired Suffolk Police Officer Sean Brennan and John Marx Sr., a part-time investigator for the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office.
“This is something they may not get in school, and we want to expose them to this because they may want to pursue this for a career,” Ferguson said.
