Adcock shines bright as a freshman

Sydney Adcock was voted Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week after an extraordinary week for the Lady Warriors softball team.
She is the youngest player on the team but doesn’t play like it. As freshman turning 15 years old in a matter of days, Adcock is already stepping in and standing out for the Nansemond River High School softball team. Adcock stood out in a stellar week for the Lady Warriors, collecting multiple runs, hits and RBIs in a win streak. Recently she was also instrumental in the Lady Warriors knocking off the top team in the area in Hickory High School.
“Last week was one of those weeks where whatever could go right for me did,” she said. “I made some key plays at third that really helped my team. I also hit really well in three games.”
Since she is a freshman, Adcock spoke about how lucky she felt to be a part of the team as a freshman and a starter. It is a remarkable feeling to her to feel like she can hang with the older girls. Shortly before the season, the freshman didn’t even know whether she was going to be able to play because of a back injury she was rehabbing. The most prominent goal for her was to heal up and possibly make the junior varsity team, but she made the varsity team instead. She knew she’d have to step her game up, and she indeed has so far.
“Varsity is a totally different level compared to JV,” she said. “The competition is more intense. Almost every team we play is a decent team. I have had to step my game up to get playing time. I feel lucky to have made the varsity and be a starting player, because there are a lot of great athletes on this team.”
Her teammates and coaches motivate her to be the best she can be on the field, because she doesn’t want to let them down. She first got into the game of softball at a young age because of her dad, and she describes him as her biggest fan. Her father passed away in 2014, but he had always been a big inspiration to her.
“He would be so proud of me,” she said. “He was the one the first got me obsessed with softball.”
Aleshia Ocasio, of the University of Florida softball team, is her favorite athlete. She plays pitcher and some third base, which are two of the positions Adcock plays. Adcock does prefer third base but pitches at times for her travel team.
“She is an amazing athlete, and I aspire to be like her someday.”
When Adcock is away from softball, she is usually hanging out with her friends. Nansemond River will be set to take on Grassfield High School on the road at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
