The Warriors baseball team enjoyed their time in South Carolina over spring break.

The Nansemond River High School baseball team took its annual trip to South Carolina for a tournament and some good team bonding. While in South Carolina, Nansemond River played in three games and went 2-1 for the week.

They picked up wins against Great Falls High School and Oceanside High School, with Oceanside being the last win before the Warriors traveled back home to Suffolk. They grabbed a 14-3 win. The Warriors put pressure on Oceanside from the beginning of the game. Nansemond River did some good hitting and created some highlights, with a Gage Williams grand slam along with a double by Bryson Dansberry and a triple by Cameron Pittman. Williams also got the pitching win. Dansberry played particularly well all week for the Warriors.

Overall, Coach Mark Stuffel liked how his team competed over the break. They were able to play a lot of players, which is good for team chemistry. The Warriors were also able to go out and do some team bonding activities, such as sightseeing, eating at restaurants and shopping.

“We hit really well the whole week. We had a really good time with each other,” Stuffel said. “You get to see how you stack up against different teams. It is good to get to play against different teams that play in pretty good baseball areas.”

“It is always a great time getting out of town and getting to play some teams down south,” Williams said. “Spending those five days with my team is a great way of bringing us closer, and it helps in the way that we play.”

Stuffel believes that the team bonding is what makes the trip worthwhile every year.

“It just brings the group together, and I think it’s well worth doing. We also play well when we go out there.” He said.

“This trip is always great for team building, and we always come back from spring break playing better,” Matt Culbert said. “We were able to get some of the younger guys some playing time, which will help us.”

Nansemond River will get back to district play when they take on rival Lakeland High School at home at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Warriors are looking forward to what they can accomplish over the last couple of months of the season.
