Food Truck Friday a hit

It seems the Suffolk Executive Offices has hit upon a winning formula to raise money for ForKids.
For the first time this year, the offices sponsored Food Truck Friday last week at their parking lot on West Washington Street, located across from City Hall and next door to the Morgan Memorial Library. Even though it was raining, the Chesapeake Concessions food truck did brisk business during lunchtime, serving up crab cake sandwiches and a variety of grilled cheese with homemade macaroni salad to hungry downtown workers and other passers-by.
It was the second Food Truck Friday, the first of which was held back in September. Another is planned for April 27 featuring J&K Style Grill — which specializes in burgers and wings; we can’t wait! — so it seems this is becoming a monthly event.
The event is a win-win-win for everybody. Downtown folks get a nice change for lunch, and the Suffolk Executive Offices get a chance to promote themselves.
And, of course, the real winner is ForKids, which not only gets the proceeds but also gets the opportunity to talk to downtown movers and shakers about their ongoing projects, including the new ForKids Center for Children and Families on West Constance Road that’s expected to open this summer.
The organization is currently renovating the former Kelly’s Tavern, which will become a hub for the its services to homeless families in Suffolk and Western Tidewater, including after-school and tutoring programs. The organization will then be able to cease use of a smaller building in a less visible downtown location that was not conducive to volunteers or to public awareness of ForKids’ presence in the community.
We appreciate Suffolk Executive Offices for bringing this opportunity to ForKids — and to hungry downtown workers.
