Hunter embraces strong start

Indiah Hunter was voted the Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week after scoring five goals against Norview High School.
Not many have gotten off to the strong start the senior Lady Warrior has achieved this year. The Nansemond River High School girls’ soccer standout currently has 10 goals scored on the season, and that includes her biggest game in her high school career against Norview. In that game, Hunter scored five goals, and it was something she wasn’t even expecting beforehand.
“I was just happy I could contribute to a win for my team,” she said.
She took advantage of the chances she had during the game, and it led to her success not only that game but for this season. Before the season started, she set goals for herself and one of them was to try to score two goals a game, which she looks on par to do. But her ultimate goal is the highest level of team success. Hunter believes the Lady Warriors can compete for a state title, and she wants to do everything in her power to help that goal be accomplished.
The senior year is always expected to be the best year, and that is what Hunter had planned. After committing to play soccer for Old Dominion University last year, she has been motivated to be as ready as possible when she reaches that level.
“I have been working so hard this past year ever since I committed to ODU,” she said. “I want to not only get better for myself, but I want to be able to play once I get there, so the work I’ve been putting in will reflect on my game during my senior season as well. I felt like this season would be a good one for me.”
Her love for the game is what motivates her every time she steps foot on the field. It’s a feeling she doesn’t experience doing anything else. Her family has inspired her to be the best she can be, as they have always encouraged her to be whatever she dreamed of and they have really played a pivotal role in her soccer career.
Hunter likes to model her game after Mallory Pugh of the USA Women’s National soccer team. She is quick and technical and has a great ability to get behind the defense to score or assist, which are all things Hunter has picked up to improve her game.
Normally when Hunter is away from soccer, she really isn’t completely removed from it. She likes to watch soccer in her spare time, while also hanging out with her friends. Though she committed to ODU last year, she signed her National Letter of Intent to play there in February.
It is spring break for Suffolk Public Schools, so Hunter and Lady Warriors will be back in action on April 12 when they take on Woodside High School on the road.
