Titan Contractors Inc. will host Suffolk’s Relay for Life Golf Tournament later this spring to raise money for the cause.

While the company has been involved with Relay for Life for a few years, this year they decided to take it one step further by hosting the tournament on May 4.

Both Jim Gudac, co-owner of Titan Contractors, and Kathy Carraway, Titan’s bid coordinator, have served as Day of Event Leads for Relay for Life in the past, and the company has sponsored the survivor tent for the past several years.

“Jim and I became Co-Day of Event Leads for the Relay for Life for Suffolk, and when we met with Tara and Dana, they talked about different fundraisers,” Carraway said, referring to the community manager and the event lead. “Jim puts on a golf tournament for his church, and so he was familiar with doing one. When they found out that, they thought we should take the lead on this.”

“When they discussed doing it, we were really excited about it because it’s a large fundraiser. It’s a benefit to relay,” said Dana DeFreeuw, the event lead. “We are excited.”

The tournament, hosted at Sleepy Hole Golf Course, will be four-person Florida best ball, and there will be plenty of opportunities for prizes. The first and second place from each flight will win prizes. There will also be door prizes.

The event is a perfect opportunity for Relay to raise money, but the hosts don’t have a particular goal in mind. Titan Contractors does hope to have as much community involvement as possible.

“We don’t have a fundraising goal. We’d like to have a full playing field, which is 144 players,” Carraway said.

Those who want to participate must register by May 1. The cost is $75 per person or $300 for a team of four. The registration form can be accessed via Suffolk’s Relay for Life page. The form can be faxed or mailed, and the fax number and address are listed at the bottom of the form.

In addition to registering for the event, those who wish can sponsor individual holes or drink carts.

“We are looking for sponsors. The drink cart is $425, or $200 to sponsor a hole. What I like about the hole sponsorship is that you can do it for a business, but people can also honor their survivors or loved ones who passed from cancer as well,” Carraway said.

Following the event, participants will get to join in dinner and an awards ceremony to conclude the evening.

“We want everyone to come, have a good time and be able to donate lots of money to the American Cancer Society to further research and treatments. Community involvement is great,” Carraway said. “We have a lot of businesses and individuals within our community that have been affected by cancer. They are helping to step up and knock cancer down.”

“Titan Contractors is a big plus to the Relay community,” said DeFreeuw.
