The Suffolk Police Department is investigating the discovery of skeletal remains at a church construction site last week.
The discovery took place Thursday afternoon at the First Baptist Church Mahan Street construction site downtown in the 100 block of Mahan Street, according to city spokeswoman Diana Klink.
Klink noted several homes, one dating back more than 100 years, once stood on the site, and that Cedar Hill Cemetery is across the street and dates to the 1800s.
The history of the church itself dates back more than 150 years.
The remains have been sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office for forensic testing to determine their age, Klink said.
