Four Suffolk boys’ basketball players were selected to Southeastern District teams.
King’s Fork High School’s boys’ basketball team led the way for all Suffolk schools with two nominations on the all-district teams. They finished for third place with a 13-5 record. James Hatton was selected first team all-district and was the only Suffolk player to make the first team. Keontae Boyette was selected to the second team in his first year as a Bulldog. Leontre Bailey was an honorable mention for the Bulldogs.
“I really accomplished a lot this season with this being my last year in a Bulldogs uniform,” Hatton said. “It feels great to accomplish this, because I felt like a took my game to another level and really shook some heads.”
Nansemond River High School’s Jeremiah Lewis was selected to the second team. Lewis recorded more than 20 double-doubles for the Warriors this season, and many — especially his coach, Ed Young — think he should have been a first-team selection. However, Lewis was happy even to be considered among the best of the best throughout the district. Justin Fatherly and Josh Hale were honorable mentions for Nansemond River. The Warriors finished tied for seventh in the district with a 4-14 record.
“I thought he deserved the first team,” Young said about Lewis. “Josh Hale and Justin Fatherly made honorable mention, which I believed Hale should have been the second team as I feel he’s had a better year than at least four of the guys on the second team. I congratulate our three guys on their accomplishments. They all earned it with work and improvement during the season as well as got better from last year.”
“It is a big accomplishment due to the fact there are so many talented players in the district,” Lewis said. “I am just grateful to be honored as an all-district player period.”
Lakeland High School’s Keimari Artis was selected to the second team. It is a big accomplishment for the sophomore in his first full season as a varsity player. He led the team in scoring and is one of the promising pieces returning for the Cavs next season. Clint Wright Jr., Quentin Livingston and Raymond Bellamy were all honorable mentions. Lakeland finished the season tied for seventh with a 4-14 record even though they are the lowest classification in the district.
“This is a good accomplishment as a first-year varsity player,” Artis said. “I wouldn’t have gotten this without God, my parents, teammates and coaches.”
