The Warriors wrestling team placed seventh in the Class 5 state wrestling tournament over the weekend.
A solid season for the Nansemond River High School wrestling team came to an end with the tourney. It is the highest ever finish for the Warriors in the state tournament. They had two runners-up with Elijah Williams and Daniel Peacher, along with other top-five finishes.
“We took seven guys, and everybody won a match, which is good,” Warriors coach Tripp Seed said. “We have five of those kids coming back next year. We had a successful season. I would have never guessed at the beginning of the season that we would be placing seventh at states.”
Seed believes his team showed a lot of growth this year. The Warriors wrestled a tough schedule this year and were able to persevere to accomplish some great things. The team was sectional champion and the Class 5 Region A runner-up. They also had three wrestlers, Peacher, Williams and Zechariah Gray, eclipse 100 career wins this season.
“We have great leadership from Elijah and Daniel all season,” Seed said. “They fell short of their goal of a state title, but they set a great example for the young kids coming up. They left it all out on the mat for us. I think they deserve to be a state champion, but it just wasn’t there day.”
With the team Seed has returning next year, he believes the postseason run the Warriors had will be something they can build off of going into the offseason.
“We have a great coaching staff, and they helped get guys better,” Seed said. “We are going to come up with an offseason plan and then put it in motion. It should be good for the guys. We saw we did well this season. We just want to continue to keep building on that.”
