Citizens invited to discuss Route 460 plans

The Virginia Department of Transportation plans to improve a stretch of highly-trafficked road into Suffolk and is asking for feedback from citizens.

Information meetings for the Route 460 safety study will be held this Tuesday at Windsor High School and Thursday at King’s Fork Middle School. Citizens will have the opportunity to review proposed improvements along Route 460, from the Windsor town limits to west of the Route 58 interchange in Suffolk.

The Route 460 Safety and Operations Study is examining the corridor to identify possible safety and operational improvements, according to vdot.virginia.gov. This study is being done in collaboration with local stakeholders and is focused on traffic operations, crash data and design features.

The improvements are proposed following last year’s demise of a proposed toll road project that would have created a new Route 460 parallel to the old one in certain sections.

The results are expected to identify drivers using the corridor, along with roadway characteristics and specific issues that affect travel. Recommendations based on these results will be shared with Isle of Wight County and the city of Suffolk, who may then pursue development projects.

Both meetings will begin with formal presentations at 5 p.m. and will go until 7 p.m., with time allotted for VDOT representatives to answer questions.

Citizens may submit oral or written comments at the meetings or submit them to VDOT Project Manager Jerry Pauley by March 5. Comments may be emailed to Jerry.Pauley@VDOT.Virginia.gov or handwritten to 1700 N. Main St., Suffolk, VA 23434.
