Suffolk’s Tractor Supply Co. store on Pruden Boulevard donated 25 bags and 17 dozen cans of dog and cat food to Suffolk Animal Control on Feb. 8, according to a press release from the company.

The home improvement store hosts pet adoption events throughout the year and makes regular donations to local animal shelters, according to store manager Lee Nicholson.

“I liked how they operate and what they’re about,” Nicholson said about Suffolk Animal Control in a phone interview. “I thought this would be a good way to help them out.”

Shelter adoptions often hinge on whether or not potential owners will have the food they need to care for the animals.

“If there’s someone coming along that needs to surrender their pet because they don’t have any food at the moment, these donations will help them through that hard time to keep their pet out of the shelter,” said Shelter Director Laurie Brittle in a phone interview.

She said this pallet of dry and canned pet food from Tractor Supply Co. is the sort of generosity that allows shelters to keep doing their jobs.

“We just graciously appreciate anytime someone thinks of us,” she said.

In addition to cat and dog food donations, Animal Control will also accept cat litter, leashes, collars, grooming supplies, toys, crates, towels, blankets, cleaning products and trash bags.
