The Nansemond River High School Warriors boys’ swim team finished the regular season with a school record high number of wins.
Even though it was going to be a tall task, the Warriors had the chance to knock off swim powerhouse Hickory High School last weekend. They fell just short of the victory, losing 88-83; however, with only one loss on the season, the Warriors finished with a school record in wins and second in the district.
They finished with an 8-1 regular-season record. They broke their previous school record of six wins the season prior. Coach James “Shamus” Riley mentioned how impressed the Hickory coaches were with the Warriors. Riley said it was the most competitive meet in which he had ever participated or even seen.
“The kids left everything in the pool,” he said. “I could not be any more proud of their effort. After the meet, the Hickory coach and their fans said that was the closest meet that their team had ever had. They haven’t lost in a district meet in 10 years.”
Nansemond River will now get ready for the postseason regional meet, which starts at noon Thursday at the Midtown Community Pool.
