If you can finagle a few extra hours out of your Saturday schedule, we’d love it if you’d buzz on over to the Suffolk Education Foundation’s second annual Grown Up Spelling Bee.

The event helps fund the foundation’s worthy goal of raising money for professional development for teachers, scholarships for students and classroom grants that allow teachers and students the chance to have resources and do projects they wouldn’t otherwise be able to do.

But if that isn’t enough to entice you to attend on Saturday, it’s just going to be plain educational and fun. Everyone at the foundation’s first Grown Up Spelling Bee had a lot of good laughs and learned some new words. Our Suffolk News-Herald team, the Typographical Airers, definitely learned the word “banausic,” which we had never heard of before. And which we, unfortunately, misspelled.

The event will feature teacher teams from many of the city’s schools as well as teams from sponsors, including our team, which is proud once again to be the Queen Bee sponsor.

Thirteen teams will don silly costumes and spell to the death starting at 2 p.m. this Saturday at King’s Fork High School. You’ll have the opportunity to vote for the best team costumes.

Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased at the Suffolk News-Herald office, 130 S. Saratoga St. Children 8 and under are free.
