Jeremiah Lewis was voted Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week after getting his eighth straight double-double last week against Hickory High School.

The junior forward for the Nansemond River High School boys’ basketball team has been on a hot streak lately. Since his nomination, he has posted two more double-doubles, making 10 straight games accomplishing the feat. It has been a good accomplishment for the Warriors’ most productive player. Last week, against Hickory High School, he dropped 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

While preparing for his junior campaign, Lewis was often told that he could be a double-double player for the Warriors. From there, those words stuck with him, and he strived to be that. He has been feeling like he has been doing what was expected of him by his teammates and coaches.

But his play does not tell the whole story about how he took the next step in his development this season. As a sophomore, he was a productive player, often showing flashes of being a good player for Nansemond River in the future. This season he knew he was going to be an integral part of any type of success the Warriors, have so he prepared his mind as such.

“I became more confident in my game,” Lewis said. “I also became more aggressive towards the basket. I worked on many things such as becoming stronger and quicker with my moves. I wanted to be more consistent with my mid-range and just become a more efficient player.”

Over the summer, Lewis played AAU basketball and participated in summer leagues and team camps with Nansemond River. He became one of the focal points for the Warriors, something he embraced it. It has actually motivated him to play even harder for his teammates.

Nansemond River hasn’t had as many wins as they’d like, but Lewis believes if he remains confident and continues to play hard that eventually, more wins will start pouring in for the Warriors.

“I just leave what I got on the floor every day in practice and in the game,” he said. “My teammates having my back also helps me feel less pressured.”

His motivation and goals have remained the same for this season. He wants an opportunity to go far in the playoffs and allow that to lead to a state tournament run. Coming into his junior season, he wanted to become a better leader and produce more on the floor while helping Nansemond River to a winning record.

His favorite part about getting a double-double is being able to show the fact that he is versatile with what he can do. He can score, rebound and defend.

Because the Warriors are a smaller team, Lewis makes it his mission to be the best rebounder he can for the team. His knack for rebounding is impressive considering he is somewhat undersized to be considered a “post” player. However, Lewis just wants to continue building on his game.

In his off time, Lewis can be found completing school work, resting his body or going to watch other teams play.

Nansemond River will be in action again against King’s Fork High School Wednesday.
