“The NAACP is one organization that’s tried to have a better life for people,” said Lue Ward, the current president of the Suffolk chapter.

Sweat, the pastor at Laurel Hill United Church of Christ, said he will focus his talk on the responsibility that everyone bears for his actions and his community.

“We have lost the accountability that each individual is responsible for making a change in their lives and in their environment and in their community,” Sweat said. “If each individual can get a glimpse that their contribution is very vital, that would be sufficient.”

Sweat said he hopes that after 102 years, people are beginning to see the NAACP as a benefit to humanity and not as an agency.

“NAACP is redefining itself,” he said. “They were reactive. Now they’re proactive.”

The awards that will be given out at the banquet include lifetime memberships in the organization, awarded for service to the community or the organization.
