Despite a late push, the Warriors dropped their second game to Deep Creek High School on Tuesday.

Nansemond River High School boys’ basketball team lost the season series to Deep Creek. They took a 71-68 loss in a close contest. Both teams had their fair share of runs. Nansemond River jumped out on Deep Creek first in the first quarter, leading 23-19 after one quarter. They shot 10-of-13 in that first quarter.

Deep Creek swung momentum back to them in the second quarter, as the Warriors only scored five points the whole quarter, all coming on free throws. They were 0-of-7 shooting in that quarter. The third quarter was only a bit better for the Warriors, as they scored nine points. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Warriors were down 51-37.

In the fourth quarter, the Warriors exploded for 31 points shooting 9-of-14. They made their way back into the game, but a couple of late-game free throws by Deep Creek ended the game.

“The kids really played well the last two minutes,” Warriors coach Ed Young said. “We were getting turnovers and scoring off of them. We just ran out of time.”

Jeremiah Lewis led the way again for the Warriors with 15 points and 11 rebounds, which made his ninth straight double-double. Josh Hale added 13 points. V.J. Wilkins and Justin Fatherly both added 11 points apiece. The Warriors had five players score in double figures.

“I feel like I have been doing what is expected of me by my teammates and coaches,” Lewis said about his ninth double-double. “That expectation stuck with me, and I have just been playing as hard as I can.”

Nansemond River will face Grassfield High School on the road Friday if the weather allows for it to happen. It will be the first of five straight road games for the Warriors.
