New middle school principal named

The incoming principal of the new Col. Fred Cherry Middle School has been announced.
Dr. Shawn Green, who is currently principal at John Yeates Middle School, was appointed by the Suffolk School Board on Thursday, according to a news release from division spokeswoman Bethanne Bradshaw.
Green has been principal at John Yeates since 2016. Prior to that, he was assistant principal at King’s Fork High School for one year and at John Yeates Middle School for eight years.
He was also a technology and business teacher in Suffolk for the previous five years.
Green has earned a bachelor’s degree from Norfolk State University, a master’s degree from Old Dominion University and a doctorate from Virginia Tech, the release stated.
Green will continue to serve at John Yeates Middle School until a new principal is selected, according to the release.
Col. Fred Cherry Middle School is under construction and will open to students in September of this year.
Also Thursday, the board appointed Shaka Miller as assistant principal of the College and Career Academy at Pruden. Miller began this school year as dean of students at Elephant’s Fork Elementary School and has been a business teacher in Suffolk for the previous six years. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Morgan State University and a master’s degree from Liberty University.
