The Nansemond River High School Warriors grabbed their second win of the season over Mathews High School on the road Thursday night.
Nansemond River won 71-60, giving them a much-needed win heading into the holiday break.
Justin Fatherly had his second 20-point game of the season to lead the Warriors in scoring. Jeremiah Lewis added 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The Warriors led for most of the game. The only time they trailed was in the third quarter by two points. However, the Warriors quickly established their lead again and closed out the rest of the game.
“This win was definitely much needed,” senior guard Josh Hale said. “I feel like we finally started clicking, and we also played as a team. This could be the win needed to propel us into a winning streak.”
The Warriors will be off until Tuesday, when they begin preparation for the King’s Fork Holiday Tournament. Warriors coach Ed Young felt it was important for his team to regroup before playing their last couple of games to close out 2017.
“We want the guys to recover and enjoy Christmas and time with their families, and we will get back at it on Tuesday,” Young said.
With only two wins, the Warriors know this isn’t where they want to be. However, it is still early in the season, and Nansemond River still has everything they want to accomplish in front of them. Young believes the biggest thing the Warriors need to fix is their consistency.
“I still believe we can be a very good team,” Young said. “We can still win our fair share of games. It is just that our inconsistency shows too much right now. We just have to keep building our consistency, and we will be fine.”
“The key is staying together and making sure we communicate on the court and just playing as hard as we can,” Lewis said.
Nansemond River will play Lakeland High School in the holiday tournament at 6 p.m. Dec. 29.
