To the editor:

“Anything you can do, I can do better. I can do anything better than you.”

“No, you can’t.”

“Yes, I can.”

This is the playful banter between Annie and Frank in the musical “Annie Get Your Gun.” These days, it could be the soundtrack for a face-off between the undefeated boys’ and girls’ basketball teams at King’s Fork High School. On different courts, yet playing against the same teams each week, the Bulldogs are knocking down opponents in tandem.

The Lady Bulldogs, led by high scorer Nylah Young, are putting up scores equal to their male counterparts. Last year’s VSHL division 4A state runner-up currently holds a 4-0 record and may be on pace to make a much-anticipated run at the title again. They are seeking to add the girls’ state title next to the 2009 state title secured by the boys’ team.

Not to be outdone, the boy’s team, under the direction of new head coach Rick Hite, is proving they can match victories with the ladies. With senior guard James Hatton leading the way, the  4-0 team is on a march to Richmond and possibly another state title for themselves.

Home or away, the Bulldogs have a tough road ahead. Being undefeated makes them a target for other teams. Anything they can do, the Bulldogs, male or female, believe they can do better. It’s up to the other members of the Southeastern District to prove that they can’t.
