An award-winning local gospel group will celebrate its anniversary this Sunday with a show at Union Baptist Missionary Church.
Maurice Yancey and One Accord has been together for nine years and will have a number of guests at Sunday’s 4:45 p.m. show, including the Canton Spirituals, Doc McKenzie and the Hi-Lites, the Wells Brothers, God’s Posse, the Brothers in Christ and Fully Committed.
Maurice Yancey has been singing since the age of 5. He started the group with his cousins, and it eventually evolved into what it is today.
The group travels two or three times a month to locations as far-flung as Mississippi, New York and Arkansas. They released an album, “I Promise I’ll Tell It,” this year and are working on other projects as well.
“They can expect some great entertainment, but it’s going to also be a move of God,” Yancey said of this Sunday’s show.
Yancey described the group’s style as old-school with a new spin. The band includes drums, keyboard, bass guitar and lead guitar.
The group was nominated for a Stella Award and received the Buzz Award from the Gospel Music Workshop of America.
“Singing to me is just another way to minister to souls that may not come to a Sunday morning service,” said Yancey, who is 35 years old. “We’re singing it instead of preaching it.”
At only 21 years old, Joshua Halsey is by far the youngest vocalist in the group.
“I enjoy it quite well,” he said of his participation in the group. He said he has always admired Yancey: “I have always looked up to him and others in the group when I was young.”
Reginald Halsey, another vocalist, said he also sees the group’s music as a ministry opportunity.
“It gives us a chance to minister to lost souls and show them it’s OK to have style and still be a Christian and praise God,” he said.
Charles Branch is the fourth vocalist in the group.
Yancey hopes to have about 600 to 700 people at Sunday’s event.
“It’s going to be a great event,” he said. “We are going to continue to spread the gospel to the world.”
Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Call 725-1617 for tickets. The church is located at 5414 Nansemond Parkway.
