Lakeland High School ended the regular season with a 45-0 shut out of Great Bridge High School on Friday.

The Cavs finished the regular season with a 4-6 record after defeating Great Bridge High School on the road. Erick Grant had a big night for Lakeland with 252 rushing yards and four touchdowns to help the Cavs to their shutout victory.

“We played well out there,” Lakeland coach Kevin Knight said. “We got it done in all three phases out there. We ran the ball well. Grant had a big night out there for us.”

Lakeland got substantial contributions all around Friday night. After last week’s win over Hickory High School, Knight said he wanted this final game to be a statement win, and Lakeland was able to do that on the road.

“That win was big for us,” Knight said. “We had some guys go out there and step up. I liked what I saw. This gives us some momentum in the right direction for when the playoffs start.”

One thing Knight was adamant on the team changing before the playoffs was limiting turnovers. Lakeland only had one turnover against Great Bridge, but Knight is hoping to get that down to zero.

“There is still stuff for us to work on,” Knight said. “Of course you would like to have no turnovers in a game, but the defense had our back.”

Now, Lakeland will shift its focus to the playoffs. The Cavs feel they will have a good opportunity in front of them playing other Class 3 schools. Knight believes that having the schedule they have in the Southeastern District should give them an added advantage over other teams.

“I do not think any other 3A teams play the schedule we play,” Knight said. “The proof is in the pudding. Every week we have a tough matchup in the SED, and I think that will help us come playoff time.”
