Lakeland High School defeated Hickory High School at home Friday to go to 3-6 on the season.
It was not pretty, in the words of Lakeland coach Kevin Knight, but he was happy to see his team get its third win of the season. The Cavs defeated Hickory 20-18.
“I was proud our guys got the win out there, even though it was not how we wanted it,” Knight said. “We have a lot to clean up.”
Offensive, Deondre Little had a solid game for the Cavs. He had more than 100 yards receiving and two touchdowns for the Cavs. DeAndre Faulk and Jamair Walker also had good games for the Cavs.
Defensively, Keonte Cobb has impressed the Lakeland coaching staff with his relentless play over the last few games. Only a sophomore, Cobb has had at least six sacks in the last couple of games for Lakeland. Antonio Vaughan also made an impact for Lakeland Friday night.
From this point forward, Knight wants his team to send a message. In the final game against a winless Great Bridge High School team, Knight wants his team to build some momentum for the playoffs. They are also hoping a win next week can secure them a playoff berth in the 3A region.
“We have to try to send a message this next game,” Knight said. “Our goal is to get to the playoffs and then get back to the regional championship, but we are going to have to give it all if we want to do that.”
It was also senior night for the Cavs on Friday. Knight has known most of his seniors since they were in middle school and is hoping the team can continue to be successful for them this season.
Lakeland will go on the road to face Great Bridge High School for their last game.
